Use Secrets: Everyone Loves a Secret

Visit the PostSecret website at http://www.postsecret.com — some of the secrets are sad, others are funny, and some are stunning. I visit the site once a week, to see what’s new.

Secrets are revealed every day on websites, and in magazines and newspapers. Here’s one. In this article, "Alleged cheating husband gets shamed on Facebook" at http://www.salon.com/2013/06/07/alleged_cheating_husband_gets_shamed_on_facebook/ an alleged cheater’s photo went viral. A woman traveling on a train overheard a group of men bragging about cheating on their wives. She took a photo of one of them and posted it on her Facebook account. By the time I read the article in Salon, the photo had been shared 99,000 times.

What’s your secret? Everyone has at least one secret. Chances are however, that although you have secrets, most of them are hidden from you — by yourself.

Here’s a task for your journal: uncover some of your secrets. You’ll find them as shocking as anything you read on PostSecret. Our purpose in digging out our own secrets isn’t to shock ourselves. It’s to learn to live.

Exercise 19: Tell yourself a secret.

Write 250 words. Complete this sentence: "My biggest secret that I keep from myself is    "
